Goals, Objectives & Reading Material (R2)

Goals & Responsibilities

  • Check ultrasound images for the technologist; Correlate with clinical history and results in the EMR; Compare with prior multi-modality imaging studies
  • Recognize and call critical results
  • Review ultrasound instrumentation, including equipment operation and transducer selection
  • Recognize and understand the significance of ultrasound artifacts
  • Recognize ultrasound findings of: cholelithiasis, cholecystitis, biliary obstruction, hydronephrosis, ectopic pregnancy, ovarian torsion, pelvic inflammatory disease, complications related to liver transplant, complications related to renal transplant, deep venous thrombosis, testicular torsion, Fournier’s gangrene and epididymitis
  • Prepare ultrasound cases for a group teaching session each Wednesday morning; Have cases loaded for an 8:10AM start
  • Be prepared to participate in the Friday journal club sessions for an 8:10AM start
  • Participate in at least one GI/GU multi-disciplinary conference during the rotation
  • Participate in at least one of each of the following ultrasound guided procedures: paracentesis, thoracentesis, biopsy/drainage, hysterosonogram
  • Observe and practice ultrasound scanning (practice performing each of these exams and show pictures to your attending: one leg of DVT study with compression and Doppler images, ultrasound images in long and transverse of kidneys, ultrasound images of uterus and ovaries both transabdominal and transvaginal, ultrasound images on gallbladder and CBD with measurement, Doppler evaluation of the liver)
